Using Dreamweaver templates & libraries

Before getting started

The Oxford Area School District is comprised of one top-level site and 5 sub-sites for the schools. When working on any page within the site, it is important that you use the appropriate Dreamweaver site definition to maintain the integrity of links between the web pages, the Dreamweaver templates, and the Dreamweaver Library. If you are unsure whether you have the appropriate Dreamweaver site definition for the section(s) of the web site you will be working on, then visit "Defining a site in Dreamweaver."

Important Note: If you are working on multiple sections of the web site (e.g. the lunch menus in the top-level section and the students od the month pages in the Penn's Grove School section, then you will need to have multiple site definitions setup in Dreamweaver.

Editing a library file to change a news item

News items are stored with library files so that they will be available across many pages within the web site. A library file in Dreamweaver must always be in the "Library" directory for that section of the web site. A library file has a .lbi file extension. To edit a library file, open the appropriate .lbi file from the Library folder. You will not see the page format as it appears in the web browser. You can make changes to the file by following the existing pattern: new items start with a double arrow (HTML code » and the character is available from the Insert menu > HTML > Special Characters.

Editing a template file to change a navigation item

A template file in Dreamweaver must always be in the "Templates" directory for that section of the web site. A template file has a .dwt file extension. To edit a template file, open the appropriate .dwt file from the Templates folder. Not all of the page elements will appear in the Dreamweaver editor window. You can make changes to the file by following the existing pattern: new items start with a double arrow (HTML code » and the character is available from the Insert menu > HTML > Special Characters.
