Physicals Policy

The primary purpose of the pre-participation physical examination is to identify if an athlete is at risk before he or she participates in a sport. The examination consists of a medical history, a physical examination, and an orthopedic screening. Information obtained during this examination will serve as the basis to which comparisons may be made following an injury. It may also reveal certain medical conditions that may exclude a person from certain sports. The examination also satisfies insurance and liability issues.

The pre-participation physical exam at Oxford High School is to be conducted by an athlete’s private physician at the expense of the athlete. A local physician has offered to perform physical exams for individuals who demonstrate extreme financial need or lack insurance for a small fee. Please let me know in advance of the season if this pertains to any of your athletes so an appointment can be scheduled. PIAA regulations governing pre-participation physical exams changed in 2006. Under the new rules, an athlete is only required to have one physical exam per year. These exams must be performed after June 1. That physical is then valid for the entire school year. A re-certification exam is only necessary if certain criteria are met. These criteria all revolve around a significant injury or illness. Athletes who meet these criteria will be notified by the athletic trainer.

Oxford Area High School pre-participation physical examinations must be signed by a physician and parent, and filled out using the PIAA comprehensive physical exam form available in the front office, school website, and training room. Physical examinations turned in using other forms will not be accepted. Be sure not to confuse the PIAA forms with a school physical as a school physical cannot be used for athletics. Please ask your physician to stamp as well as sign the physical exam form.

The physical exam packet consists of instructions, four sections, and an emergency information/medication permission slip. Make sure you read the packet thoroughly and sign in the numerous places. Please return the filled out examination packets to the athletic training room or the main high school office prior to the first day of practice/tryouts. Coaches have been instructed not to accept physical examinations. In order to insure fairness and equal opportunity for all Oxford High School athletes, physicals will not be accepted once a season has been under way for one week.

Athletes who wish to participate in more than one sport only need to notify the athletic trainer after the conclusion of their current sport. Also, if any changes in an athlete’s physical condition or contact information occur, please notify the athletic trainer immediately so that those changes can be passed on to coaches.
