Mrs. Kim McCardell

Welcome to the counselor website for Jordan Bank and Elk Ridge! As the counselor, I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to work closely with wonderful staff members and families at both schools.  My goal is to develop a relationship that allows me to support children with their social/emotional needs so that they may be as successful as possible in all areas of life.  I also enjoy working with parents and encourage you to contact me whenever needed.

Focus areas:
Classroom guidance: I teach lessons in all the classrooms, grades K and 1. Lessons are based on ASCA standards, developed from needs in the classrooms and can be requested by teachers. This part of my job is a great way to teach social skills, share valuable information, and reach all students in the school.  Check back to the website as I will begin to add the information shared in the classroom lessons.
Small groups: I offer small groups for all students on an as needed basis. Students are referred for groups by parents and teachers. A letter was sent home to students at Jordan Bank describing the counseling program and asking for parents to please let me know if you would NOT like your child to participate in a small group experience.  Elk Ridge students have brought home a permission slip for the groups that have met so far.  The small group experience can provide a safe place for students to work through difficult issues, and/or learn and practice social skills. Some of the groups offered at Jordan Bank and Elk Ridge are Family Changes (divorce, separation, new sibling), Making Choices (what is a good/bad choice, choices affect others, taking responsibility), Taming My Temper (anger management), and Positive Kids (self-esteem).  Groups will be developed to support making friends. Loss/grief may be a small group or with an individual child.  In my experience, the students involved in groups love coming to group (many want to participate again) and come away with an increased sense of self esteem and often times some new skills. The small group experience is one of my favorite parts of my job as an elementary school counselor.
Individual work with students: I work with students in individual counseling settings as needed. Referrals for individual counseling come from parents, teachers, other school staff, and students. As a school counselor, I am not able to provide long-term therapy but can provide brief, solution-focused counseling to students on a variety of issues and concerns.
Mentoring: In the Oxford Area School District, there is a mentoring program available, matching a community member with a student to support their personal/social and academic development. These mentoring relationships help build self esteem and self worth, can increase school attendance, and can increase student performance.
Parent/staff consultation: A great deal of my time is spent in consultation with parents, teachers, and other professionals. I believe in working as a team to provide the best academic experience and opportunities for all students. I encourage parents to contact me at any time for any reason. If there is something I cannot help a parent or staff member with, I will find a resource to help.

Please feel free to contact me.
