About Jordan Bank School

Welcome to the Jordan Bank Kindergarten Center in the Oxford Area School District! Jordan Bank houses our full day Kindergarten program for the district. Class sizes range from 25 to 26 students. Our 11 classes are taught by 1 teacher and 1 aide. Therefore, students are able to receive even more individualized attention.

Our Kindergarten program is full of hands-on activities to develop students' academic and social growth. Students are instructed in Mathematics, Science and Social Studies using research-based, current instructional tools and programs that foster a rigorous learning environment. However, a major emphasis is placed on Literacy.

Teachers use a balanced literacy approach when working with students in the area of Language Arts. Our Language Arts program revolves around the 5 components of effective reading instruction which are: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Our Kindergarten also places a strong emphasis on the skill of Writing.

In addition to a robust core program, the Oxford Area School District believes in the development of the arts as well. Therefore, students receive instruction in Music, Art, Physical Education and Library. Instruction in these areas help to strengthen students in gross motor skills and fine motor skill development. Students receive instruction in these areas once or twice a week, depending on the rotating six day cycle schedule.

Students receive formal instruction in computers and technology once each week in a lab type setting. Our computer classes support the instruction that students receive in the classroom.

Jordan Bank has a school-wide positive behavior program which is similar to the other schools in the district. Throughout the year, students are taught basic expectations based on 4 school goals: Responsibility, Respect, Honesty and Effort. Students receive Bee Tickets for demonstrating these behaviors, and they enter a monthly drawing where they get to have their picture taken with our school mascot, Buzz the Bee.

A Kindergartener's day is full of activity! Our school has many traditions that allow the students to showcase their creativity through such venues as the Mask Parade and pumpkin decorating contest in the fall, the Sock Parade and gingerbread house creations in the winter and the Hat Parade in the spring. These events allow the entire school to come together to celebrate each other's work. Pictured to the left are 2 of our teachers, Mr. Baughman and Mrs. Baughman, dressed for Silly Seuss Day.

Progress academic and social skills is reported in the form of Parent/Teacher conferences in the fall and spring (or by parent request). Progress reports are generated 3 times per year in trimesters. Parents can view their child's progress through a secure, password required, web-based system.

Parent and family involvement is encouraged throughout the school year, and special programs and presentations are planned so that we can work together to provide a quality education for our children.
